A book by Anushe on the life and work of her mother the artist Natasha Shoro, takes its title from the joint show of the two that took place in the Founders Hall Gallery, Soka University of America in 2016. There, the paintings of Natasha were shown with photographs by Anushe accompanied by the author’s explanatory writing. That year Natasha showed her work in Karachi. In her work the artist created an intimate fusing of elements that have influenced her art language throughout her formative years.
Born in New York with roots in Pakistan, through her father’s career, the artist traveled extensively, experiencing diverse cultures in years spent in Asia, Africa and Europe. These childhood years were to colour her life and her work. Natasha was enormously inspired by the art of her surroundings, learning and earning prizes from the schools she attended. After finishing her formal education, the artist joined the Iowa State University, earning a BFA with honours and distinction in 1991. In 1992, she returned to Pakistan with her family, and held her first exhibition in the country in Karachi in 1993. One remembers the great interest created in local art circles by her work at that time.
More travel ensued when Natasha moved to America with her architect husband. While her husband set up his office, Natasha continued with her art studies earning her Master’s Degree in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking from California State University, Fullerton. Working as an artist and art educationist in 1914, Natasha published a teaching philosophy. Raising her family and teaching, she continued to paint, experiment and show her work globally.
Anushe Shoro has created a book that traces the extraordinary life of her mother from childhood to the present times, and in the process traces with fascinating explanation the development of the artist’s unique style. The book contains a number of exciting images of the artist’s work at various stages and describes the inspiration that inspires each artwork. In the process Anushe creates a fascinating experience for the reader.
