A solo exhibition by Sarfraz Musawir at Art One 62 Gallery recently left his viewers mesmerised by his current body of work. Sarfraz Musawir is one of Pakistan’s most well respected and well established watercolourist. Bold, beautiful and striking his work always stands out.
The artist was born in 1969 in the small town of Umerkot, Sindh. He completed his Masters in Physics from the University of Sindh and later went on to receive his Diploma in Fine Arts. The artist specialises in monuments, cityscapes, landscapes.
His paintings are full of colour, life and hustle bustle. There is movement, activity and beautiful play of light and shadow in his work. Even though all his work is done in watercolours, his colour palette is vibrant and bold.
The scenes he paints are ordinary, but captivating in the way they are depicted. A beautiful piece shows a church in Saddar, surrounded by pedestrians, cars, cyclists and rickshaws. One can almost hear the chaos and commotion of the street. Nothing out of the ordinary for a busy area in Karachi, but the way it is presented and painted makes it appear quite appealing. The church nestled between concrete residential blocks stands out with its pointed steeples and arched windows.
Another piece shows a popular thoroughfare of Karachi, Shahr-e-Faisal. The road is, as always, packed with cars and motorcyclists and sits between a multitude of residential and commercial buildings.
The artist hasn’t restricted himself to only painting the streets and areas of Karachi, but also beautifully paints the Wazir Khan Mosque (among other various monuments across the country).
Sarfraz’s work makes his talent, skill and passion for art apparent. His exhibition is a treat for art enthusiasts, art lovers and collectors.
