A group show which was curated by S.M. Raza was held at Full Circle Gallery in Karachi. The show focused on realistic and conceptual possibilities in contemporary landscape paintings. The show consists of artists who visualise and share landscape in an unconventional manner, using new techniques, perspectives and material.
Aqsa Khan Nasar shares, “travelling between Quetta and Karachi made me realise the importance of landscape of Baluchistan. These barren landscapes always appeared precious to me as all of them are naturally constructed with multiple layers of minerals. Travelling also introduced that idea of how often this mineral-rich province is viewed, used and ignored. As many have seen the barrenness of these landscapes, my work plans to show other perspectives of Baluchistan. “Due to the cold weather velvet is commonly used as a fabric for clothes for women. Using this luxurious fabric as a metaphor the artist has recreated these barren landscapes into visually appealing drawings to illustrate the richness and potential of the province.
Faraz Aamer Khan’s work is focused on experience of human existence. “To take the structures and histories we create in order to better understand our, and specifically my own, place in the universe. Medium across medium, visual to visual, it’s all an exercise to affirm and question everything.“
Hassaan Gondal uses photography to share his thoughts. “This series of photographs have been made during various trips to the coastal belt of Karachi. By employing long exposure and strobe, the images represent fleeting emotions. I have often wondered if these images reflect how the landscapes made me feel or state of mind I walked in with.”
Noman Siddiqui admits and shares that most people enjoy and purchase beautiful landscape paintings, but it’s not the reality most of us live in. We are surrounded by concrete buildings, dust, pollution and climate change is a reality of the world we live in. “Balloon in my work represents earth, an ordinary object with delicate nature. In terms of keeping, it safe, we keep it away from heat and sharp objects. However, human nature has not kept the earth safe and now our planet is slowly destroying itself with the drastic change in weather and through natural disasters.”
A wonderful group of artists who have shared their unique perspectives and individual talent, skill and handwork in sharing their very personal and thought provoking perspectives through their art work.
