Gallery 21 in Islamabad hosted an exhibition that brought together a group pf distinguished calligraphers who explore the spiritual, cultural, and aesthetic depths of the written word. Participating artists in this show were; Yaseen Khan, Imran Baloch, Rafiq Ullah, Kausar Iqbal, Zakir Baloch, Noor Kamran and Rahim Khan.
The gallery shares the motives and inspirations for each of the artists. Yaseen Khan’s work takes inspiration from Persian and old Kufic scripts. His work pays tribute to classic traditions while breathing into them contemporary sensibility. Each composition becomes a dialogued between precision and spirit.
Imran Baloch explores the idea of erosion and evolution of linguistic identity. He uses clay as his preferred medium, and shapes Urdu words as a tribute to languages that are slowly disappearing.
Rafiq Ullah’s calligraphy beautifully uses architecture and emotion. His work stood at the intersection of geometry and grace, transforming the discipline of structure into meditative spaces of reflection. For him, each line has both structure and soul, an offering that merged sacred design with the tenderness of human experiences.
Zakir Baloch deep dives into the inner landscapes of transformation. He explores the how turmoil and peace collide. Through symbolic use of space and illumination his art spoke of healing and surrender, a visual meditation on grace and renewal.
Noor Kamran’s series, Fluctuation, inspired by the poetry of Sabras by Mullah Wahji, explored the shifting nature of perception and emotion. Blending pen and ink with digital aesthetics, she visualised the fragmented, fluid stated of the human mind.
Rahim Khan’s sculptural calligraphy is rooted in the natural elements of Gilgit, transformed letters into forms of reverence. His work echoes Rumi’s works, “life is a journey of servitude”, highlighting that earthly and eternal creations unite.
Beautiful, serene and captivating this exhibition captures the attention of all viewers!
