A solo show by Farhat Ali at Sanat Intiative was recently held in Karachi. This current series of work acts as a critique on the genre of miniature painting. The artist uses characters from mainstream cinema as inspiration for this collection.
Farhat Ali’s painting of Darth Vader and Maula Jatt employs a restrained yet effective colour palette. The warm, monochromatic yellow background creates a neutral stage that heightens the visual tension between the two figures. The stark contrast between Darth Vader’s deep blacks and Maula Jatt figures pale whites reinforces symbolic opposition; dark versus light, domination versus defiance. The paint application is controlled and deliberates, favouring clarity over expressive brushwork. Textural details, such as the reflective sheen on Vader’s armour and the fabric folds of Maula Jatt’s traditional outfit are carefully rendered, demonstrating technical precision.
Another captivating piece shows Marilyn Monroe and Raj Kapoor, under the umbrella as rain falls around them. The pairing of these two iconic cinematic figures is conceptually compelling, bringing together two different cultural histories of film and stardom. The characters are positioned as equals, facing each other with quiet attentiveness, suggesting shared emotional connection. The rhythmic vertical strokes of rain introduce movement and atmosphere.
In another painting Farhat places two villains together by pairing Captain Hook and Mogambo, the artist creates a dialogue between fictional villainy and cinematic antagonism drawn from different cultural traditions. Although both have vastly different narratives, both figures embody authority, menace and theatrical masculinity. Their body language is suggestive of rivalry, rather than alliance. The figures are meticulously detailed. The decorative patterns, embroidery and accessories are rendered with precision, emphasizing status and character identity.
Farhat’s work is marked by intricate details, controlled brushwork and clarity of form thereby creating a unifying visual language. By juxtaposing icons from different cultural backgrounds the artists encourages his audience to reconsider how power, vulnerability and identity are constructed and perceived.
